Oh Yes I Did...

Because I came to the realization that, aside from meat procurement, I'm not really into deer hunting like I used to be, and that I'd rather have a yard full of bird dogs than a closet full of deer rifles. So I sold one of the latter and bought one of the former. Damn good trade-off, if you ask me.

He's from Berg Brothers in Minnesota, and I'm ashamed to say we haven't named him yet. For the sad tale you can check out today's Man's Best Friend, and if you happen to have a suggestion for a name, I'm all ears.

Right now he mostly sleeps, craps and howls when we leave him in his kennel, you know, typical puppy stuff, but he is a precocious young man. When he met Jenny he first tried to latch on to one of her boobs, then when that didn't work he climbed up on one of her hind legs and went to town like a tiny little jackhammer. Jenny, ever the innocent one, merely turned around in circles looking confused.

Not so, Tess. He tried latching on to her hind leg and for his troubles got his first taste of what every other dog in the neighborhood experiences when they go sniffing around back there. He's not likely to do that again.

Is he going to make a bird dog? You never know until it's too late, of course, but hope springs eternal and I'm very excited that I'll have two young dogs in the field this fall. And there must be something in the air, because I know several guys who either already have or are getting new pups this spring.

Now all we need are birds...

  1. If you have one deer rifle you have plenty. Bird dogs on the other hand.....I'd heard a rumor that you might be adding to the stable this spring.

As for those birds, have you talked to Doug Schoeling at the OK Dept of Wildlife?

  2. You did once admit to me that you had three 6.5X55's so its not the hardship you're making out. How about Swede as a name? Or if you subscribe to the dogs-name-needs-to-be-shoutable school of thought how about 'shikar' ? Hindi for Hunter.

  3. SBW, romantic codswallop. I have three dogs. Number one is called 'Dog'. Number two is called 'Dinge' (which is German for 'Thing'). Number three is called, well, 'Three' and they all answer to their names with a lot less embarrasment for the owner shouting, 'Carrot!', I mean 'Parsnip!', 'Come here my little Cabbage!' Oh bollocks to these Viking names, 'come by here you little Indian shit!'

  5. Mark, I know a few ODWC guys but I haven't met Doug. Need to introduce myself to him, I guess. Did you meet him through NBCI?

SBW, I'm ashamed to admit that I still have three 6.5s, although the one I sold was also a 6.5x55. So I had four. Even for a caliber fetishist, that was too much. I think I'll keep the three I have, even though I'm in the process of refinishing my old .30-06 FN Mauser. I do still like hunting and shooting deer, just gonna stop spending any time engaging in horn porn.

    Hmmm, I like "Swede"...

Dog, Dinge, and Three. That's pretty damn funny.

    1. I don't know Doug personally, I got his name from a friend who's involved in NBCI, SEQSG, and a few others. Those guys tend to bump into each other quite a bit I suppose.

Dying to know what name you pick. That's a really good looking pup. I gotta admit the first thing I though of when I saw the patch over his right eye was a pirate. How about "Teach" for an entry in the obscure column?

      Keep us posted-

  6. Dude, you are killing me. I've had nothing but heartache over dogs this year.

He's cute. No idea for a name, though - that's personal. Except for Hippo.

  7. If I get a fourth, I shall call it Sten. I am sure SBW won't mind...

  8. He's a good lookin' little turd, Chad, congrats! I look forward to hunting behind him before long.

As for names, that is indeed personal, but I've always liked Rommel. The Desert Fox, you know, cunning and wily. And hell, most all of the cover we hunt is desert or near desert these days, you know?

It's never really fit my stable of bitches, but maybe someday.

  13. Many thanks for updating, Chad. And like Mark... gotta hear it. The name is...?

  14. Good luck with him, We just got a new GSP so the sleeps, craps and howls is very poignant right now.
